Why Your Hot Water Heater Is Producing Cold Water Only

When you step into the shower or start washing dishes, it can be frustrating to discover you’re out of hot water. There are several problems that can occur with your hot water heater, resulting in cold water coming from your faucets and fixtures.

Pilot Light Problems

If you have a gas hot water heater, and the pilot light goes out, no heat is being produced. You can relight the pilot light according to instructions from the manufacturer of your unit. Hiring a professional is the safest option, though. If the pilot light continues to go out after relighting it, the thermocouple may require repair or replacement.

When a thermocouple fails, gas cannot reach the burner in your hot water heater. Blockages or corrosion may be preventing proper flow.

Tripping Circuit Breaker

If your hot water heater is frequently tripping the circuit breaker, you may have a heating element that is overloaded or shorting out. If resetting the water heater breaker doesn’t restore the appliance’s functioning, a professional can replace faulty elements or wiring.

Thermostat Malfunctions and Heating Element Issues

If your hot water heater thermostat is stuck in the Off position, water will not heat. The same applies if the heating element in your water heater is failing. Replacing these components should restore hot water function.

Buildup of Sediment and Mineral Deposits

If you have high levels of calcium and magnesium in your water, deposits can form on the interior components of your water heater. Hard water deposits can insulate heating components, reducing their ability to heat cold water. We recommend draining and flushing your tank once a year to prevent deposits.

Dip Tube Malfunction

A dip tube is necessary for cold water to be added to the bottom of a hot water tank. If this tube is damaged, cold water may mix into the top of the tank. This will produce cooler water coming from faucets and fixtures.

Checking the Anode Rod

There is an anode rod inside your hot water tank. This is a sacrificial part that collects sediment and mineral deposits before they can damage your tank. If your anode rod is heavily coated with debris, this can result in heating elements experiencing buildup and damage. It’s important to have your anode rod inspected annually as part of routine water heater maintenance.
